The studio consists of Luke Bartels, who creates custom furniture from local hardwoods; wooden surfboard maker Danny Hess; Josh Duthie, who reinvents old chairs with new ideas; and the artist and sign painter Jeff Canham. Singapore might be better known for its insatiable foodies and gastronomic offerings than its cups of joe, but local coffee roaster Papa Palheta is attempting to change all that. Located in the Newton area, away from the island’s café hubs, this speciality coffee boutique has gotten coffee-crazy Singaporeans talking with its selection of coffee beans all roasted and sold on-site.

Instead of following the usual café formula, Papa Palheta acts as a tasting bar where customers can order coffee (free of charge) to sample in the outdoor courtyard or the boutique’s quaint sitting room, before deciding which variety of beans to buy. The beans themselves are sourced from all over the world, either from local brokers or personally carried back by staff from trips abroad. The boutique prides itself on supporting sustainable coffees that span the usual suspects as well as more exotic varieties, rarely available in the country. Closed twice a week just for roasting, its current catalogue is made up of two blends and 7-9 coffees sourced from Micro-lots and single-origin estates in places such as Sumatra, Sulawesi, Guatemala and Brazil.

Roasting and retailing coffee in Singapore is no easy business. There just isn’t the same loyalty for drinking coffee, unless it's from the local kopitiams (neighbourhood coffee shops.) According to PPP owner Leon Foo, who left his job as an investment banker to fund the cause, Asians are starting to warm to the balanced flavour of city roast. “The toughest factor faced in Singapore is usually freshness and we're able to roast our beans locally to guarantee that.”

While a fully-fledged café is now on the cards to open later in the year, Foo is passionate about making each cup of coffee served the best that it can be. “We constantly strive to improve our roasting techniques and brewing methods – the spirit of speciality coffee.”

Stussy and Stones Throw Records have partnered for Raph Rashid's classic pic of J Dilla on a limited-edition Stussy Tee. This will be released Feb. 13, 2010 in White and Black, available at stonesthrow.com and Stussy locations.

The photo was taken by Raph Rashid in Dilla's L.A. dining room-turned-studio, summer 2005, for his book Behind The Beat: Hip-Hop Home Studios.

This tee is officially licensed with J Dilla's heirs, who have recently announced a reorganization of the J Dilla Estate (read here).

How to Make Classic Potato Skins:

Pierce 4 large russet potatoes with a fork. Bake directly on the oven rack at 350 degrees until tender, about 1 hour. Let cool, then quarter lengthwise and scoop out the flesh, leaving a 1/4-inch shell. Brush both sides with melted butter and season with salt and pepper. Bake, skin-side up, at 450 degrees until crisp, about 15 minutes. Add your favorite team toppings. (For cheesy skins, flip the baked shells over before topping, sprinkle with 1 cup grated cheddar cheese and bake an extra 5 minutes.)

4 ripe avocados
3 limes, juiced
1/2 red onion, chopped
1 garlic clove, minced
2 serrano chiles, sliced thinly
1 big handful fresh cilantro, finely chopped
Extra-virgin olive oil
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
Directions
Halve and pit the avocados. Scoop out the flesh with a tablespoon into a mixing bowl. Mash the avocados with a fork, leaving them somewhat chunky. Add the remaining ingredients, and fold everything together to gently mix. Lay a piece of plastic wrap right on the surface of the guacamole so it doesn't brown and refrigerate 1 hour before serving.

Ingredients
1 1/2 cups chopped onions
3/4 cup chopped carrots
3/4 cups chopped celery
4 cloves garlic, smashed
3 bay leaves
1 cup distilled white vinegar
3 lemons, quartered and juiced
3/4 cup salt
2 tablespoons cayenne pepper
2 (1 1/4-pound) lobsters
8 cups mache or a chiffonade of mixed greens
Cilantro-Avocado Dressing, recipe follows
1 1/2 cups halved teardrop tomatoes
1 1/2 cups diced hearts of palm
1 1/2 cups orange segments, white pith removed
Fresh cilantro sprigs, for garnish
Directions
Set a 6-quart stockpot with 1-gallon of water over high heat and bring to a boil. Add the onions, carrots, celery, garlic, bay leaves, vinegar, lemons and juice, salt and cayenne pepper. Bring the pot to a boil and allow to cook for 15 to 20 minutes. Place the lobster into the water and cook until red and cooked through, about 7 to 8 minutes. Immediately immerse in ice water to halt the cooking. Once the lobsters have cooled, remove from the water and set aside.

Use a chef's knife to crack the shell of the lobsters and remove the tail meat and claw meat. Chop the lobster into 1/2-inch pieces, and set aside. Place a sixth of the greens into each of 6 large chilled martini glasses. Drizzle a little of the dressing over the greens. Place 1/4 cup of the tomatoes in each of the glasses, as well as 1/4 cup of the hearts of palm, 1/4 cup orange segments and a sixth of the chopped lobster. Drizzle more of the dressing over the parfait and garnish with fresh cilantro sprigs. Serve immediately.

Cilantro-Avocado Dressing:
1 ripe avocado, diced
2/3 cup mayonnaise, preferably homemade
1/2 cup packed cilantro leaves, blanched and drained
1 1/2 tablespoons orange juice
1/2 lime, zested
1 to 2 limes, juiced (4 to 5 tablespoons)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon white pepper
1/4 teaspoon green hot sauce, or to taste
Combine all ingredients in a food processor and process until smooth.

Ingredients
1 pound linguini
4 tablespoons butter
4 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling
2 shallots, finely diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
Pinch red pepper flakes, optional
1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/2 cup dry white wine
Juice of 1 lemon
1/4 cup finely chopped parsley leaves
Directions
For the pasta, put a large pot of water on the stove to boil. When it has come to the boil, add a couple of tablespoons of salt and the linguini. Stir to make sure the pasta separates; cover. When the water returns to a boil, cook for about 6 to 8 minutes or until the pasta is not quite done. Drain the pasta.

Meanwhile, in a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons butter in 2 tablespoons olive oil over medium-high heat. Saute the shallots, garlic, and red pepper flakes (if using) until the shallots are translucent, about 3 to 4 minutes. Season the shrimp with salt and pepper; add them to the pan and cook until they have turned pink, about 2 to 3 minutes. Remove the shrimp from the pan; set aside and keep warm. Add wine and lemon juice and bring to a boil. Add 2 tablespoons butter and 2 tablespoons oil. When the butter has melted, return the shrimp to the pan along with the parsley and cooked pasta. Stir well and season with salt and pepper. Drizzle over a bit more olive oil and serve immediately.

Ok so Valentines Day is just around the corner. The fine folks here at Dirty decided to give you some pointers on saving money on Valentines Day and still comin out on top.(If you know what im sayin) Over the next week or so we are going to drop a few recipe's on you to get your girl in the mood.

1 2/3 cups plus 1/2 cup heavy cream
1/3 cup cardamom pods, cracked
4 extra-large egg yolks,
at room temperature
Pinch of kosher salt
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons instant espresso
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon confectioners' sugar
1/3 cup ground pistachios
Directions
Bring 1 2/3 cups cream to a boil in a saucepan over medium heat. Remove from the heat, add the cardamom, cover and let steep 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Bring a small pot or kettle of water to a boil. Place a folded damp kitchen towel in a 2-quart baking dish; arrange 8 espresso cups in the dish (the towel will keep the cups from moving).

Whisk the egg yolks and salt in a bowl. Return the cream to medium heat, add the sugar and bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Strain the cream into the egg yolks, whisking constantly. Stir in the espresso and vanilla until combined. Transfer to a liquid measuring cup, then divide among the espresso cups.

Place the baking dish in the oven and pour boiling water into the dish until it reaches halfway up the outside of the espresso cups. Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake until the custard sets around the edges but still jiggles in the center, 35 to 45 minutes.

Let the custards cool in the water bath, about 10 minutes, then transfer to a rack to cool completely, about 30 minutes. Cover each cup with parchment paper (to absorb condensation), and then plastic wrap. Refrigerate until set, at least 2 hours.

Whip the remaining 1/2 cup cream and the confectioners' sugar with a mixer until soft peaks form. Top each pot de creme with a dollop of whipped cream and sprinkle with pistachios.

Yesterday, Polaroid announced it would make Lady Gaga creative director. "Wait, what?!?" is a totally appropriate response to that news and possibly something we said out loud when we read it. Polaroid explained "As you know, Polaroid recently went Chapter 11 (again), relegating the once great brand to little more than intellectual property to be exploited by the likes of Hilco Consumer Capital and Gordon Brothers a couple outfits that know the power of branding." Enter Lady Ga Ga, who we guess is a huge Polaroid fan. At the end of the day we guess that makes her perfect for designing ("designing") new cameras and other gadgets for the company, which hopes to launch the first ones next Christmas.

New Year’s Eve revelers in L.A. County can ride any bus or commuter train for free that night, officials said today. All buses and trains operating will be free between 9 p.m. Dec. 31 and 2 a.m. Jan. 1, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. After 2 a.m., regular fares go back into effect. Most rail lines will operate every 20 minutes from Dec. 31 into Jan. 1, officials said. The Orange Line will operate all night. On Jan. 1, the Gold Line will run additional trains from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. in anticipation of crowds for the 121st Rose Parade and the Rose Bowl game, officials said. For those who want to view the floats after the parade is over, there will also be shuttles available – at their regular fares -- from the Sierra Madre Villa station of the Gold Line to the post-parade venue. Shuttles will run from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 1, officials said. There will also be shuttles from the post-parade venue to the Sierra Madre Villa station until 5:30 p.m.

Us Versus Them brings you another collaboration, this time for the release of “La Guerra Clandestina” with fellow West Coast brand, Black Scale. Working from a concept created by Mega and Us Versus Them designer Graham Nystrom, the brand’s applied a signature hand drawn style, pulling inspiration from the cryptic crests and symbolism of old European architecture. Aiming to keep the true meaning of the symbolism cloudy, the graphic is centered around the Ourobouros, an ancient symbol of a serpent eating itself, which is said to represent death and rebirth, and the phrase “La Guerra Clandestina”, meaning The Secret War, lends a heavy feeling to the project.

All the rumors are true, Volume has been working on a new frame for some time now and we got a picture of the sample build from our contact over at their office. The samples are out to Fonseca, Puckett, Mosher and Congo for testing. Without saying too much more Volume does plan on leaking out more info little by little because they are far away from production and don't want to say to much since they could still be changed. The main goal of the Thrasher is to give more tire clearance, no more tire overlap (lengthened the TT), still run the rear wheel slammed and not have the tire rub the ST. All while still aesthetically looking clean with a new hour glass HT and BB shells. Everyone from tricktrack.org and the Volume team was a huge help on making this thing happen. Who ever said forums were useless?

The street is brightly lighted and wide for downtown. A couple with a baby carriage cross the street. An urban warrior stops to chain his bicycle. A couple of downtown hipsters saunter over. They're all headed for the new Lazy Ox Canteen.

After a lengthy odyssey through this and that restaurant, Josef Centeno (Meson G, Opus, Lot 1) has partnered up with Michael Cardenas, founder of the Sushi Roku empire, and finally has his own place. His food. His way.

"Welcome to Little Tokyo!" calls out Cardenas, sporty in tattoos and a cap worn backward, as he greets newcomers. Set on San Pedro Avenue between 2nd and 3rd streets and beneath a luxury apartment building, Lazy Ox Canteen is rustic and inviting with its salvaged wood walls and broad sidewalk terrace.

It's been open only a few days, but already the restaurant feels as if it's been dishing up food to an enthusiastic crew of regulars for, if not years, then months.

It all sounds good. For nibbles, there's Moroccan-spiced beef jerky on toast with a fried egg on top or delicious chopped chicken livers, Tuscan style, on toast, topped with a slice of bacon. Cod brandade fritters, straight from the fryer, are delicious with a sunny yuzu citrus aioli.

The menu is mostly small plates, but not all that small, really, including salads, such as blue lake bean salad with hazelnuts and tarragon dressing or greens with blood orange and roasted beets. Brick-roasted mussels with Thai chile sauce makes a good dish to share: Just scoop up all the fiery juices with a shell or a piece of bread. And don't forget an order of Kennebec frites.

Looking around, I notice that plates are going back to the kitchen without a speck of food left. That's enthusiasm. And why not, when you've ordered the crispy fried buttermilk quail with walnut sauce or the braised pot roast with cream of wheat, and this is brilliant -- kumquats and red wine. Mmmmm. And for dessert, a creamy tapioca and rice pudding brulée served with a Sichuan pineapple sauce.

Centeno plucks references and dishes from all over the globe, borrowing from Japan here, Italy and the Mediterranean there, North Africa or his grandmother's kitchen.

Lazy Ox Canteen is just what Little Tokyo could use Cardenas isn't done however. He's also planning a Japanese grill restaurant next door.

How do you celebrate Christmas? If you’re the son of a cable television magnate, the answer lies with a special one-off Ferrari 599.

Called the P540 Superfast Aperta, this golden roadster was built by Ferrari and Pininfarina expressly for Edward Walson, whose father is recognized as the inventor of cable TV. Walson, who was apparently smitten with a one-off 330 LMB used in a Frederico Fellini film, approached Ferrari last year to commission a modern interpretation of the car.

As the original was an unusual mixture of styling cues (mostly 250 TR and 250 LM), so too is the P540. Although the front fascia still carries some 599 influence, the grille, rear fascia, and side scoops are patterned after the 330 LMB, while the body line itself resembles that of a Maserati GranTurismo. Powertrain -- a 611-hp 6.0-liter V-12 mated to a six-speed F1-style sequential gearbox -- is unchanged from a “normal” 599 GTB.

Ferrari built the car in 14 months, allowing Walson to, in his words, take delivery of the “most special Christmas present of my life."

Ben Drury has worked with Nike once more on a pair of limited edition sneakers, based on the UK’s capital city – the “Silent Listener” Air Max 90 Current. Taking inspiration from London at night and his passion for walking in the countryside the sneaker features a dark, almost nocturnal colourway with hiking style laces and D-ring lace loops. The duality in the aesthetic an the purpose of the shoes reflects his own personal feelings - urban yet rural.

Sadly they are super limited. Issued today there are only 125 pairs available from 1948 in Paris.

Here is the latest collaboration between Sebago and French design agency La MJC, The Fairhaven. The Fairhaven was originally released in 1980 and La MJC’s treatment sees them add contrasting black panels with white stitching and a white leather heel tab to the chunky boot like shape that offers a more robust and urban look. La MJC was one of the first marketing and communications agencies in Europe to specialise in urban youth culture and using the internet to help brand interact with their audience, they have worked with everyone from Colette and Stussy to Nokia and Coca Cola.

Lady Apple, Grapefruit and Creme Fraiche Salad

2 lady apples, thinly sliced
1 medium red grapefruit, peeled and segmented
Fresh ginger, thinly sliced
Pistachios, chopped
Vanilla simple syrup
Creme fraiche, whipped
Fresh mint
Fresh stevia leaves

Make the vanilla simple syrup with equal parts water and sugar. I used 1/2 cup sugar and 12 cup of water with half a vanilla bean. Bring to a boil until sugar dissolves and let it cool. Set aside.

Arrange the sliced apples, grapefruit segments and ginger on a plate. Drizzle with the vanilla simple syrup, sprinkle with the chopped pistachios and herbs and arrange some creme fraiche quenelles on top.
